Passing: Dave Schubert, 'San Francisco's Wildest Street Photographer,' Dies at 40

Dave Schubert, who captured the “underworld of smart-ass scrappers, non-stop taggers and street-fighting drunkards” in San Francisco, was discovered dead on Jan. 5 at his longtime home in the the city’s Mission District, notes KQED. He was 40. Schubert’s work was exhibited at venues in San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York and seen in publications including Anthem, Purple Magazine, and Thrasher. He moved to San Francisco in 1995 after being awarded a scholarship to study photography at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon immersed himself in the Bay’s thriving skateboarding and graffiti scene.   Read the full Story >>

Spotlight: Electrifying Astrophotography Over the Middle East

Social News: Instagram Is Ditching the Shopping Tab

Over the years, Instagram moved its focus away from creativity to business, ads and shopping; but now, notes DIY Photography, the app is inching back in the other direction. Instagram has announced that it’s removing the Shop tab from its app. The change will come next month and will redirect the Reels tab to the bottom of the screen to replace the Shop tab. The new post button will also move to the bottom of the screen, adds Gizmodo. The Shop tab was first introduced in 2020 to replace the then-popular Activity tab.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: Sophie Calle's 'The Blind'

In 1986, French artist Sophie Calle introduced herself to people attending an institute for the blind in Paris and asked them “what their image of beauty was.” Calle photographed each person she interviewed and typed notes of their conversation, which were displayed next to her images when the series debuted in Los Angeles in 1989. The work, which cemented Calle’s reputation as an artist who is part sleuth, part philosopher, is on view at the Art Institute of Chicago through Jan. 23.
