In his 10 years helping travelers discover the Northern Lights, guide Markus Varik had never seen anything quite like it, notes My Modern Met: In early November, the sky in Tromsø, Norway, was illuminated with vibrant pink streaks. “While Varik had seen pink auroras previously, they'd never been this strong,” MMM reported. Varik was able to capture photos of the intense light show, which was caused by strong solar storm that temporarily cracked the Earth's magnetic field.

The days of producing cheap cameras and printers is a thing of the past for Canon, notes Digital Camera World. ”We have changed the industry that used to make cheap cameras and cheap printers," Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai told Tokyo Keizai Online recently. This year, Canon closed a factory in China that was making its cheapest low-end cameras, while production of cameras in Japan has been streamlined and automated, bringing down costs. The depreciating yen makes it advantageous to export products from Japan, especially when focused on high-added-value products, noted Mitarai.

Natural Landscape Photography Awards Thursday December 1, 2022
Photographer Brent Clark takes the top prize in the 2022 Natural Landscape Photography Awards—the second edition of the competition—for a series of evocative landscape images. The competition was started to “promote the very best landscape photography by digital and film photographers who value realism and authenticity in their work,” note the organizers, with rules set up to prevent deceptive editing techniques. More than 1,100 photographers entered from 55 countries this year, adds The Atlantic.

San Francisco is sending more police and community ambassadors the city’s Marina neighborhood in the aftermath of an attack on a wedding photographer, reports KRON. The attack that took place on Nov. 9, when a photographer from Texas taking portraits of a bride and groom was pistol-whipped by two armed men at the iconic Palace of Fine Arts. Rangefinder notes that the attack has drawn new attention to a rise in thefts targeting photographers in the San Francisco area and prompted some to turn down shoots in the area and others to hire security.
