Passings: Allan Porter, Editor of Camera Magazine, Dies at 88

American photographer, journalist and designer Allan Porter, who from 1965 to 1981 served as the editor of the Swiss photography magazine Camera, died on October 5 in at the age of 88, notes Blind. As an editor, he helped launch the career of many now-renowned photographers, including Josef Koudelka, Stephen Shore, and Sarah Moon, at a time when photography was just beginning to enjoy acceptance in the art world. In addition to championing the work of modern photographers, Porter revisited neglected periods of the past, including early photojournalism; pictorialism; and 19th century American photography.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: A Field Guide to Photography and the Media

The Art Institute of Chicago has been exhibiting photography since 1900 and collecting it since 1949. The exhibition “A Field Guide to Photography and the Media” (through April 10, 2023) celebrates that long (if rather unsung) history by spotlighting the museum’s collection. Divided into eight sections, the presentation features more than 150 works that cut across time, space, and genre. Tech News: The First Speedlight Designed for Canon Mirrorless Cameras

Canon's newly launched EL-5 is the company’s first speed light designed specifically for the company’s mirrorless cameras. It is directly compatible with the Canon R6 and R6II, the R3, R7, and R10, notes DIY Photography. The EL-5’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery should allow you to shoot up to 350 full-power triggers on a single charge. The speedlight is able to continuously trigger up to 95 flashes in a row. Honor Roll: Global Peace Photo Award 2022 Winners

Indian photographer Sourav Das is the winner of the €10,000 “Peace Image of the Year” prize in the 2022 Global Peace Photo Award competition for his reportage series "A Small yet Great Victory Over the Pandemic.” The work focuses on the initiative of an Indian teacher, Deepnarayan Nayak, who turned the walls of his village's houses into school blackboards during the coronavirus pandemic.
