ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena has named photographer and educator Everard Williams as chair of the Photography and Imaging Department. He becomes the first African-American to serve as an undergraduate department chair in the college’s history, notes Pasadena Now. Williams was once an ArtCenter student himself—he graduated with a BFA in 1989—and has served as a professor, faculty director, and department interim chair at the institution.

Perhaps it was all that time people had on their hands during the pandemic: Flickr is adding a new virtual photography category to help users find and categorize images they capture in video games. Previously, the platform only offered three content categories: photos, illustration and art, and screenshots. The addition is an acknowledgment of just how popular virtual photography has become in the past couple of years. “We’re at the point where most games either ship with a photo mode at launch or the feature is added after release,” notes Engadget. The Association of Photographers (AOP) has raised the alarm over the Text and Data Mining copyright exception that the U.K. government plans to introduce, notes PetaPixel. The proposed law change would allow machine learning programs that feed artificially intelligent (AI) text-to-image generators to forgo licensing of copyright images. Currently, the U.K. law permits non-commercial purpose machine analysis of online content provided that it is not resold for other purposes and the sources are acknowledged. Read the full Story >>
