All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, a documentary about the photographer Nan Goldin, was awarded the Golden Lion for best film at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on Saturday. The film, from director Laura Poitras, was the rare documentary to win the Golden Lion and won over strong competitors, notes The New York Times. The film examines Goldin’s art, life and her activism in protesting the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, for their roles in the opioid crisis. “I’ve never met anyone like Nan,” Poitras said in her acceptance speech, praising Goldin as “courageous.” Read the full Story >>

Photographer Fred Lyon, who built “an incomparable record of his native city in a career that spanned more than seven decades,” died on August 22, notes KQED. Santa Monica gallery owner Peter Fetterman, who has represented Lyon for decades, described the his work as "a love poem to the city.” Philip Meza, whose recent book Inventing the California Look featured Lyon's photography of interior decor, said that Lyon’s career “touched on every significant aspect of 20th-century photography.” Read the full Story >>
