It’s not too early to start laughing at pets behaving comically in pictures: The Comedy Pet Photography Awards—sister to the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards—has announced the finalists of its 2022 competition. The shortlisted images and videos were chosen from hundreds of entries submitted to the competition from nearly 70 different countries. The winners will be announced on Sept. 14. Legal Brief: Court Overturns Prior Ruling that Photos of Picasso's Art Was Fair Use

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has overturned a lower court’s ruling involving a longstanding legal battle involving the copyright of certain photographs of paintings by Pablo Picasso between the French copyright holder and an American art editor. In 2019, U.S. District Judge Edward Davila ruled that a French court’s 2001 ruling of astreinte—a monetary damages for copyright infringement—did not apply in the U.S., citing “fair use” on part of the art editor’s re-publication of the images. The appellate court’s ruling reverses that decision and remands it back to the lower court.   Read the full Story >>

What We're Reading: 'Farewell, Dirck Halstead'

“Everyone needs a mentor. Mine was Dirck Halstead. His was Robert Capa. Dirck never met Capa, but he was able to bid him farewell.” So writes Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly in a remembrance of Halstead, who died in March at at 85. “Dirck’s final wish was that his ashes be left at Robert Capa’s grave,” writes Kennerly. “I put some in a small Canon battery case and placed it at the tombstone. It was a full-circle moment that honored Dirck’s love of Canons and Capa.”   Read the full Story >>
