Landscape photographer Mark Bauer believes in photography competitions, saying they are “brilliant for your confidence” and can get your work seen by lots of people, including those who are looking to buy pictures. “In the past, I’ve picked up commissions from big clients as a direct result of competition success, and on a smaller scale have sold prints of winning images,” he notes in a Digital Camera World tutorial. British photographer Kate Kirkwood has an eye for landscapes that are craggy and austere, and hairy. Kirkwood’s work, noted Colossal recently, is deeply rooted in the countryside of the Lake District, where she’s lived for the last 34 years. “There, underneath the clear, blue skies or amid the haze of dense fog, Kirkwood frames what appears to be vast, barren terrains that with further examination,” explains the website. With at least 32 journalists killed in Russia’s war on Ukraine, veteran photojournalist Timothy Fadek is sharing practical advice for other photographers on how to stay safe while covering the conflict. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have issued more than 2,000 accreditations to foreign journalists, notes PetaPixel. “For a young photographer, a conflict less than 2,000 kilometers (~1,200 miles) from home is still a professional opportunity,” explains Wilfrid Estève, associate director of the Hans Lucas photo agency in France. Now in its fourth year, the Minimalist Photography Awards competition celebrates the visual power of less and simple, encompassing subject matter from architecture and landscapes to street life, fine art, portraiture, aerial and wildlife. The Minimalist Photographer of the Year prize goes to German photographer Daniel Dencescu for his series “Forms of Murmuration,” capturing the undulating formations of birds in flight.
