Spanish photographer, artist and poet Ouka Leele, one of the greatest and brightest talents of the Movida Madrileña cultural explosion that followed the end of the Francisco Franco dictatorship, died on May 24 at age of 64, reports The Guardian. Leele began drawing, painting and devouring history of art books at an early age. After studying photography, she alighted on what would become her trademark style – an often riotous fusion of monochrome photographic images overpainted with gaudy watercolors, adds TG. Canon Explorer of Light Vanessa Joy has been photographing weddings for more than 20 years and, notes Pop Photo, she prides herself on making her client’s big day a fun and stress-free experience. She also knows how to roll with changes in the industry. “When I first started, wedding albums were, I don’t know, maybe 50 pictures. Now, most album designs are about a hundred pages and there are three or four pictures per page. With all of that, client expectations have definitely gone through the roof,” she says. Venus Optics has never feared making unique lenses, and now, notes NoFilmSchool, it’s tackling anamorphic glass. The newly announced Venus Optics Laowa Nanomorph series includes the 27mm T2.8, a 35mm T2.4, and a 50mm T2.4 with a 1.5x constant squeeze ratio. The company says they’re the “world’s tiniest anamorphic lenses” and in mirrorless form, they are, though the Canon EF/PL mount versions are a little larger and heavier than others, adds DIY Photography. Colorado-based architectural photography James Florio is the recipient of this year’s Julius Schulman Excellence in Photography Award, named for the late Los Angeles-based photographer who famously shot the city’s midcentury Modernist Case Study Houses in the 1960s. The award is handed out yearly by the Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University, which was founded in 1995 to support the burgeoning field of architectural photography, notes Metropolis magazine, which spotlights Florio’s work.
