The mother of an 11-year-old girl who killed herself last year is suing Facebook parent company Meta and social media company Snap, alleging they are responsible for her daughter's suicide, notes CBS News. Tammy Rodriguez claims in her suit that Meta-owned Instagram and Snap-owned messaging app Snapchat caused her daughter, Selena Rodriguez, to become addicted to what the complaint calls their "dangerous and defective social media products.” Read the full Story >>

Clear winter skies and the promise of a beautiful sunset led photographer Simone Engels to a park on Vancouver Island recently, but as she trained her lens on the pinkish hue of the landscape of the Pacific coast, she was shocked to see a large, iceberg-like shape on the horizon. She snapped an image and for nearly half an hour watched the hulking white shape on the horizon before it disappeared. The photo went viral and Engels learned that what she saw was really a mirage. The Alexia 2022 Professional and Student Documentary Photography Grant Competition is open for submissions. The recipient of the professional grant will receive $20,000 to produce a proposed project addressing socially significant topics. The recipient of the student grant will receive $1,000 to produce a proposed project. The student winner also will receive a tuition-free semester at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) has released the first-ever technical specification designed to certify the source and history of digital media, reports PetaPixel. Launched last year, C2PA brought together the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), which focuses on systems to provide context and history for digital media, and Project Origin, a Microsoft- and BBC-led project that was designed to tackle disinformation in the digital news ecosystem.
