New York Photo Festival 09

By Peggy Roalf   Thursday May 7, 2009

Just a week from today, DUMBO - Brooklyn's art and media haven on the waterfront - will be transformed into an international destination for photography mavens. The second annual New York Photo Festival (NYPH) opens  May 14th and runs through Sunday, the 17th featuring special exhibitions, panel discussions, screenings and book events, with notables from the world of photography.

nypf_08.jpgThe New York Photo Festival is the place to mingle, as seen in shots from the book party at powerHouse Arena last year.

Organized by Daniel Power, founder and publisher of powerHouse Books, and Frank Evers, founder of the media company IAM and former managing director of VII Photo Agency, NYPH's mission is to present the newest and most important trends in contemporary photography through the personal vision of internationally respected curators and publishing professionals.

This year's special exhibitions are curated by William A. Ewing, director of the Musee de l'Elysee, Lausanne; London-based editor and photo book publisher, Chris Boot; Jody Quon, photography director of New York magazine; and Jon Levy, director of Foto8.

On Thursday, May 14 starting at 9:00 pm, powerHouse Arena hosts a party and booksigning, where books by many participating festival artists will be available.

This year's event again features Aperture Presents, a series of panel discussions at St. Ann's Warehouse curated by Aperture's editors. Panels will take place every day from 5 - 6 pm. Among the highlights are Cuddle (with Bill Hunt) on Saturday, May 16 and Photography After Frank: A conversation between Philip Gefter and Andy Grundberg. The Warehouse is also home to additional presentations beginning daily at 11 am, and will host the New York Photo Awards on Friday, May 15th at 8 pm.

Beyond the main exhibition pavilions, the festival presents a select group of cultural institutions and independent curators who will showcase photographic work that represents their view of the future of photography. This year's Satellite Shows include Eyemazing magazine, the Tierney Fellowship honorees, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and Redux Pictures, among others. And for the first time, NYPH offers portfolio reviews, presentations and master classes in the Review Pavilion.
