Election Day Special

By Peggy Roalf   Tuesday November 4, 2008

The longest presidential campaign in history is finally over. After New Yorkers cast their ballots today, many will gather at parties to watch the results of a race in which racial and gender barriers were toppled.

But before nightfall, and until it closes this Saturday, the exhibition on view at Leica Gallery is one of those can't miss shows. Obama: The Historic Campaign in Photos, curated by Deborah Willis and Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, presents 100 photographs by top photojournalists, portrait photographers and Obama volunteers that highlight the campaign of the first black American to lead the Presidential ticket of a major party. The exhibition accompanies a book of the same title published by Amistad/Harper Collins, with a text by Ms Willis, Chair, Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and Kevin Merida, Associate Editor of the Washington Post.

The show, which documents every nuance of the campaign trail, from hand-shaking, baby-bouncing and barbeques to war room strategizing and public face-offs, is on view through Saturday, November 8 at Leica Gallery, 670 Broadway, NYC.

Next stop: Election Night Sleepover at Storefront for Art and Architecture. Due to the popularity of Storefront's Presidential Debate broadcast event, the gallery is going one better tonight. In addition to live cable news coverage of the returns, blogging stations, for both reading and writing, are being set up to mark the closing of the exhibition, White House Redux, the results of a competition to redesign the Presidential digs. The event begins 6:00 pm at Storefront for Art and Architecture, 97 Kenmare Street, NYC. Drinks will be provided while they last but bring your own food and sleeping bags. Coffee and croissants will be served at 7:00 am. Free and open to the public.

In Dumbo, Galapagos Art Space is hosting Obama-Fabulous, an election night party with complete Network coverage projected live on the 14-by-12-foot screen. Other goodies include a Presidential kissing booth, live entertainment by the Yes We Can!-Can Girls, and the promise of free cosmos for all if Obama wins. Doors open at 6:00 pm, with a gate fee of $10. Galapagos Art Space, 16 Main Street, Brooklyn.

With what might be the biggest voter turnout in history, the 44th Presidential Election has inspired similar events from coast to coast. This just in: San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is hosting Freedom of Art: Election Night '08, The Hottest Election Night Party in Town, free admission, cash bar, 6:00 - 11:00 pm at 710 Mission Street, SF. So wherever and for whomever you vote, there's no reason to stay home tonight. Check the local feed for the party organized with you in mind.
