Fair Warning, New York

By Peggy Roalf   Thursday March 20, 2008

If this year's Whitney Biennale, heavy on installation and performance art, left you wanting more paint on canvas, hang on for another week. The tenth edition of The Armory Show opens next Thursday, at Pier 94 in New York. And The International Fair of New Art, as it is subtitled, has attracted a galaxy of satellite fairs, to be scattered throughout Manhattan's west side.

One of the biggest contemporary art fairs today, The Armory Show began in 1994 at the Gramercy Park Hotel. The once shabby-not-chic hostelry offered a somewhat raucous locale for exhibitors, many from the East Village. They propped paintings up on beds, taped drawings on walls and parked sculpture in the corridors for a couple of days in the spring, and introduced some of today's art stars including the UKs Tracey Emin.

Reincarnated in 1999 at the 69th Regiment Armory, the site of the Armory Show of 1913 that introduced modern European art to America, it adopted the legendary name. The Armory Show soon outgrew that space and after a stop at The Javits Center, it moved to the piers in 2001.

The funky downtown aura of the original has since given way to the gloss of the international art market. On the piers, a shiny white box environment will be built from scratch to house the four-day event. In last year's installment, carefully curated solo shows were everywhere, with painting the predominant medium.

This year The Armory Show is joined by eight international art fairs, each with a special focus. Taking place throughout Manhattan's west side, from Pier 40 on the south to Lincoln Center's Damroch Park on the north, and from the Hudson River on the west to Lexington Avenue on the east, the spring ritual brings together new art from around the globe. A total of 480 galleries, including 91 from Chelsea, will be represented.

Here's the list, in geographical order from south to north. Free shuttle service between The Armory Show and the satellites will be available during fair hours. Please check links for details, directions, and special events.
