Wednesday notePad
It’s probably safe to assume that most events in hurricane-socked areas will be rescheduled. And because many servers are down, information is sketchy. Here are a few updates and notes from the field.
Pictoplasma will return to Parsons at a later date—probably in February 2013. In its 4th US edition, the Pictoplasma Conference originating from Berlin will return to New York to present a marathon of inspiring lectures, talks and panel discussions by some of the most outstanding artists, illustrators and designers pushing the edge of contemporary character visualization. With so many participants stranded in airports, to say nothing of the lack of power and transit in NYC, the organizers had no choice but to postpone. Information.
Dumbo was badly flooded, and events are being rescheduled. This just in from Klompching Gallery: In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, we are writing to inform friends and clients of the gallery that the gallery is closed until further notice. ConEd and the team managing our building are working hard to restore power and get the building up and running, so please stay tuned for an update.

This photo posted by scallywagandvagabond.com on Monday morning shows historic structures in Red Hook, Brooklyn being inundated.
Dan Cooney wrote to say that West Chelsea is without power, and his opening of Maciek Jasik’s work on Thursday will be postponed.
Some friends whose design studio on East 22nd Street, Onoma LLC, is without power just reported that the Chase Bank opposite FIT, on 7th Avenue, has opened its doors to people who need to recharge their mobile devices. They were invited in and seated at a desk, where they were able to transfer data from their server to their laptops. Is this a great town or what?
The book launch party for Mirko Ilic | Fist to Face, which was to have taken place on Monday, has been postponed. Stay tuned for further information.
Meanwhile, in the lovely foothills of the Catskill Mountains, The Women’s Studio Workshop Fifth Annual Gala and Auction will go ahead as scheduled, on Thursday October 4th. A few tickets are still available for the event, to be held at the historic Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY. Guests are invited to arrive early to tour the beautiful grounds or paddle a boat on Lake Mohonk before enjoying a dinner of specialties from the Hudson Valley’s seasonal bounty. Among the items being auctioned off are a get-away to the Montecucco wine country of Tuscany; a personalized ceramic class for six at WSW, including an exhibition and wine & cheese reception at the WSW Gallery; and a glider ride over the Catskills, to name a few. Information. To set up a proxy bid, please call (845) 658-9133. About WSW.
If you don’t get The Daily Heller, you should. In today’s post, Steve pointed out the need for a new system of naming hurricanes; a blinding glimpse of the obvious, if there ever was one. Here’s what he wrote: I've never met a Sandy I didn't like, but this hurricane betrayed its benign moniker. There have been worse-Katrina was no pussycat-but in New York we've never had one that closed down the entire subway system, flooded all our tunnels, or shut our mighty bridges. It's easy to forget that when nature gets angry, it doesn't matter what sweet name it's given. It's free to act beyond ferocious, vicious, and unforgiving. Sandy is over, but the sense of being in limbo persists. It was one thing to anticipate something named Sandy, another to be hit by its brute force. [more] [subscribe]
