Saturday Night Party for Murakami Fans
Pop culture, fine art and commerce collide in the world of Takashi Murakami, arguably the most recognized contemporary Asian artist today. In conjunction with (c) Murakami, his retrospective at L.A. MOCA's Geffen Center, the public is invited to a panel discussion and painting party with L.A. artists Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman and Simone Legno this Saturday night.
The discussion will be moderated by Eric Nakamura, co-founder of Giant Robot, the publishing and retail outfit generally credited with bringing widespread recognition to Asian pop culture and art in the U.S.

A lively discussion is promised about why and how artists in Los Angeles are blurring the lines between art and commerce to spread their ideas beyond galleries and museums. The enterprising participants have been at the forefront of creating and merchandising pop culture products that spring from their art production.
After the discussion, the audience is invited to participate in creating a collaborative painting with the artists, and a unique performance experience by Butoh master Oguri, accompanied by DJ Alphabeast. When it's over, everyone will walk away with a piece of the painting. Drinks and light refreshment will be available for purchase.
Tickets are $15 for MOCA members; $20 for nonmembers. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Please check the MOCA website for information and directions.
