2012 Benefit Auction Preview

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday October 17, 2012

October always brings a flurry of benefit photo auctions that offer collectors unusual opportunities to expand their horizons while contributing to the programs of the wonderful not-for-profit educational/cultural organizations that feed our souls. This year is no exception, with three events just around the corner, in date order:

On Tuesday, October 23, Aperture Foundation celebrates its 60th Anniversary with a Gala Dinner & Photography Auction. Starting at 6pm, with cocktails and a silent auction, the event will continue with dinner, the live auction—with Daile Kaplan of Swann Galleries at the gavel—and honorifics. Festive attire is in order to pay tribute to Henry Buhl, Sondra Gilman & Celso Gonzalas Falla, John Gutfreund, Lynne & Harold Honickman, Mark Levine, Frederick Smith, and to the many great photographers and writers whose work has shaped the Aperture legacy. Works by Nan Goldin, Elliot Erwitt, Sally Mann, Martin Parr, and David Levinthal, among others, are being offered, with online bidding currently available. Tonight, a preview exhibition opens at Aperture Gallery and Bookstore, 547 West 27th Street, 4th Floor, NY, NY, with a reception from 6 to 8 pm. The Gala takes place at Gotham Hall, 1356 Broadway, at 36th Street, NY, NY. Information.

Among the items being offered this year are photographs by Ralph Gibson and Jock Sturges; paintings by Alex Katz and Enoc Perez; and exciting events including a power lunch and studio tour with CNN Anchor/Chief Business Correspondent Ali Velshi; a weekend getaway for two to the Summer 2013 Salzburg Music Festival; and a studio tour with artists Ilyaand Emilia Kabakov at their Mattituck, Long Island studio. Information.
