Saturday, September 28, 7-10pm: American Punchline at Subliminal Projects
Cartoonist/artist/illustrator Ward Sutton—the creator of the Sick-O cartoonist Stan Kelly, who has been telling people what to think at The Onion for an interminable length of time—is now branching out into the FINE arts, with his debut on Saturday at Shepard Fairy’s gallery, Subliminal Projects, in L.A. [Just stick with me, ok?]. Fairy, widely admired for his political posters [left, 2024] has curated American Punchline, a group exhibition examining the symbiotic relationship between art and politics through the satirical lens in a time when the lines between satire and reality, hyperbole and truth are ALMOST undetectable. Fairy believes that art should be accessible to everyone and that art can come from many different perspectives and cultural niches. Good art is good art, whether it’s done on an album cover, a skateboard, canvas, or found cardboard, he says. [Ok? We’re getting there]. This all makes lots of sense to me, as I have NEVER once included a cartoon, however scathing*, of Donald J. Trump in DART because he is NOT funny enough to EVER become a meme—which Stan Kelly very definitely IS. [for moruse to e about this phenomenon, go here]. Mr. Kelly will present his foray into new frontiers of creative expression, including painting, prints, and even the stickers that No-Good Teens use to deface public property. It’s a fine debut, as he joins Guerilla Girls, Isabelle Brourman, Kelly Breez, Nadya Tolokonnikova (Pussy Riot), Robbie Conal, Shepard Fairey, and Winston Tseng. Ward will probably join the party to steal enough new ideas to keep Mr. Kelly going for at least another month at The Onion. *My deepest apologies to Steve Brodner, Barry Blitt, John Cuneo and so many others for this unwavering policy—PR

Saturday, October 5, 4-6pm: Jenny Belin | Cats, Coconuts for the People at Gowanus Wine
Brooklyn-based artist Jenny Belin began the “Cats and Coconuts” series shortly after Kamala Harris announced her presidential campaign. “The weeks leading up to her announcement had been so disheartening,” Belin says. “The sudden shift in the news was more than just hopeful; the electric charge was vibrant and palpable.
I wanted to celebrate my excitement with gusto. When the opposing party came after ‘childless cat ladies,’ it fueled my fire.” Cat portraiture is a significant focus in Belin’s work. The artist enjoys capturing the “unique personalities” of her feline subjects. The works in “Cats and Coconuts” are not just valentines for Harris, they are also love letters to all the cat people who support her.

Through September 27, 7:30– 11pm: Jeffrey Gibson | …Are You Listening? Brooklyn Bridge / The Anchorage
This is the last in a series of public installations by Jeffrey Gibson in conjunction with Climate Week. During this period, the multidisciplinary artist will trigger a sequence of moving and still-image digital artworks taken from his animated video The Spirits Are Laughing, 2024. The works are straightforward: multicolored images with geometric patterns are paired with short, poetic phrases that express the indigenous philosophy of a spiritualized and anthropomorphic land. Gibson reminds us of the importance of communing with the natural world. Displayed upon the utilitarian surfaces of metropolitan life, it is his hope that city goers will pause, and listen to the land’s many voices.
