Closeup: How Letizia Battaglia Photographed the Mafia and Lived

Now 84, her hair dyed pink as if in defiance of old age, Letizia Battaglia is an icon in Palermo, Sicily, her native city: Battaglia photographed mafia violence in the 1970s and 1980s, creating what she has called an “archive of blood.” Two of her images were crucial in proving former prime minister Giulio Andreotti’s links to organized crime. Battaglia’s life and work is featured in the film Mafia, which, notes The Guardian, offers “a glimpse of the heavy price Battaglia paid for her bravery and commitment.”
