Exhibitions: Shahidul Alam Is Optimistic About Art's Power

In 2018, Shahidul Alam spent over 100 days in jail after speaking out in defense of student protestors in his home country, Bangladesh. For his bold advocacy for free speech, Time magazine included him in its Person of the Year award, notes Art News, which recently talked with Alam on the occasion of an exhibition at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York — the first comprehensive US survey of his work. Despite his legal troubles, he says he is optimistic about the power of art.
