Paul Sahre: Standing Tall with TMBG

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday January 18, 2012

If ever there was a design polymath, it's Paul Sahre. Designer, illustrator, photographer, and inventor, his process and practice consistently taking the road not taken. For a recent assignment to create the packaging for a new release by rock stars They Might Be Giants, he has topped himself, creating a life-size "truck hearse" out of paper and cardboard (below left), and directing the music video for TMBG's single, "When Will You Die."

In a recent email, Sahre wrote,
as you may or may not know, i have been busy building a life-sized monster truck hearse for the band they might be giants--made entirely of card board and epson prints--for the last few months up at adam wahler's A to A studio in stamford, CT.

we are done. finally. and so is the monster.

our music video for a new Giants song "When Will You Die," wherein we build the monster and then destroy it (recycle it) can be seen/linked to here.

Sahre closed by saying, this has been one of the hardest, most rediculous/pointless yet rewarding things i've done in a while. maybe ever. Here's why:
- 6,000 square feet of cardboard was used
- 20 pounds of flour (for the wheat paste) was used to adhere the printouts to cardboard
- The hearse was 13' x 22'
- After it was built, and before it was recycled, it filled a 30' x 10' x 10' storage space
- The hearse weighed 500 lbs.
- 8 people had to lift and turn the monster in order to steer it
- They were able to roll it for 100 feet (just like the Wright brothers) before the tires collapsed
- "Hot glue gun burns are a bitch!" — Paul

Now you can build your very own tabletop size truck hearse (above right). Download your TMBG Paper Monster Truck PDF here. And get information for the TMBG tour, starting January 26th, here.

Correction: This opening is on Thursday, January 19th, 6-8 pm, not Friday: Norman Mooney | Works on Paper. Sasha Wolf Gallery, 548 West 28th Street, NY, NY.
