Social News: Instagram-Friendly Lake Is a Power Plant's Dangerous Dumping Ground

Tucked away in a wooded area just outside the Siberian city of Novosibirsk is a turquoise lake that in recent weeks has sparked an Instagram craze: The lake’s vibrantly-colored waters has been luring scores of visitors who capture themselves kissing on paddle boards and frolicking in swimsuits. But, notes The Washington Post, the Siberian lake isn’t a natural wonder: It’s a man-made dumping area for waste from a nearby power plant, and its striking color is due to dissolved calcium salts and other metal oxides that can be harmful if they come into contact with people.
