Friday Night in L.A.

By Peggy Roalf   Tuesday July 3, 2007

When Daniel Peacock's announcement for his upcoming exhibition, Sweet Spot, arrived, I thought, "this looks like summer fun."

Sweet Spot (the announcement reads): Noun, origin unknown. 1. a place of dizzying delights, whimsical wonders, and unexpected revelations.

One canvas at a time (the announcement continues), Daniel Peacock creates a universe founded solely on the logic of visual delight. His paintings surprise, amuse, occasionally frighten, and always illuminate unmapped areas of an invisible world we can't help but recognize as our own.

So I caught up with Daniel yesterday by email to ask a few questions about life and art.

Peggy Roalf: What is your favorite unmapped area of your invisible world?
Daniel Peacock: Well if you can get love on the canvas, heck that's a start.

PR: How does the logic of visual delight differ from, say, the logic of chaos theory?
DP: I like to paint a painting when it's upside down. That way I don't have to look at it directly - upside down sometimes can make the piece more interesting. Also, I'd love to be able to paint in complete darkness. With no visibility whatsoever. That would make it hard to see the piece, so I know that wouldn't work well, but I like the idea of adding some chaos to the process.

PR: Are any of the characters that inhabit your paintings your alter ego?
DP: All of them. Many of the critters are oppressed, really.

PR: Are there any recurring characters that simply won't go away?
DP: I have this doggy-like beast with a barber pole tube connecting it's ends together. That one is still revealing itself to me. Odd one. The muses confuses.

The opening party for Sweet Spot at La Luz de Jesus is Friday, July 6, 8:00 - 11:00 pm. The exhibition runs through July 29. Please check the website for details. Illustration above: Middle of the Sea by Danial Peacock. Acrylic/oil on board.
