State of the Art: AI-Generated Portrait Sells for $432K

An artificial intelligence-generated portrait has sold for a staggering $432,000 at auction. It was the first listing of its kind by a major auction house, notes PetaPixel. The artwork was sold at Christie’s in New York on October 25th. Though it was estimated at only $7,000 to $10,000, the artwork sold for for much more after bidding war between five determined bidders. Titled “Edmond de Belamy, from La Famille de Belamy,” the bizarre-looking portrait was created by the Paris-based collective Obvious Art using an AI named “min G max D Ex[log(D(x))] + Ez[log(1-D(G(z)))].”
