Makers Market Celebrates Local Artisans

This week’s art-by-cycle tour took me to the annual juried crafts fair known as Makers Market. On a perfect day for cycling – hazy sun with high overcast skies and a cool summer breeze, my friend and I went first to Astoria for a tasty Cypriot lunch at Aliada’s shady streetside cafe on Broadway and 30th Street.
Then on to Socrates Sculpture Park, which hosted the annual juried crafts fair for the third year running. The market, presented in collaboration with the Noguchi Museum, showcased the work of more than 50 American artisans, many who call Brooklyn their home, whose products include hand-turned wooden bowls and ceramics, glasswares, lighting, and surfboards. That’s right, surfboards – from Mollusk Surf Shop, located on the Williamsburg waterfront. One of the most intriguing items offered were hand-carved hand paddles for blasting over the oncoming waves.
The market was housed in three large tents, and some of the items that caught my eye were cork furniture from DMFD (bottom row, left); gorgeous finely knitted fashion and home accessories by Elyse Allen Textiles (bottom row, right); and jewelry by Emily Miranda, whose moss caves made a stunning display for the precious-metal finery (top row, right).
If you missed this year’s Makers Market, it’s not too late to catch up with some of the artisans at the Market's dedicated Facebook page. And you can check out the art, craft and cinema events coming up this summer at Socrates Sculpture Park. Information.
