In Focus: Covering the Indelicate Issue of Open Defecation

After years covering wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Andrea Bruce was asked by National Geographic in 2016 to undertake one of the most difficult assignments of her career.  The subject: Open defecation. “[O]nce you start researching you realize that it’s among the most important issues today, affecting nearly a billion people. If you don’t have proper sanitation, you don’t have clean drinking water, and then you don’t have a healthy population,” Bruce tells The New York Times.
