Downtown For Democracy, the Arty PAC

By Peggy Roalf   Monday May 7, 2018

Downtown for Democracy is a political action committee [PAC] that works in art, music, fashion, film, writing, theater, food, media and advertising, and shares a deep commitment to America’s progressive traditions. Their activism utilizes creativity to reach people, to educate and to raise funds—through image, words and music. D4D aims to be the voice of creative people across the USA, raising money that will be spent strategically in key districts to get out the progressive vote in the 2018 and 2020 elections.

Downtown for Democracy teamed with Marian Goodman Gallery for an installation at Frieze New York last week (above), where new limited edition prints by Paul Chan, Rashid Johnson and Richard Prince—whose 18 & Stormy (2018) is a composite portrait formed from the faces of the woman who have publically accused President Trump of sexual misconduct and adult actress Stormy Daniels (who alledges being paid off by Trump’s attorney Michael Cohen). Info

Following is a sampling of recent events in the New York Area [info from D4D website]. Upcoming events will be posted in the Tuesday DART Board as they come up.

NADA, NY AND THE INDEPENDENT, NY MAR 8, 2018-MAR 11, 2018

Art fairs like NADA and Independent offer Downtown for Democracy a unique opportunity for creative activism—lending a platform to share its message and optimize fundraising efforts over the course of a few short days. In a demonstration of solidarity, fairs, artists and gallerists have banded together with Downtown for Democracy to educate fairgoers about what’s at stake in the upcoming midterm elections on November 6, 2018.

TAKE BACK THE HOUSE PARTY FOR SWING LEFT & FL-27, DECEMBER 9, 2017

With 2018 midterm elections approaching, Downtown for Democracy hosted a Take Back The House event for Swing Left to raise awareness about voting in the upcoming elections in Florida’s 27th Congressional District (FL-27) and other swing districts around the country.

NADA CULTURAL PARTNERS BOOTH, DEC 7, 2017- DEC 10, 2017

FINE ART PRINT FAIR, OCTOBER 25-29, 2017

D4D joined Two Palms in their booth at the Fine Art Print Fair at the Javits Center from October 25-29, raising significant funds from the sale of D4D editions by Marilyn Minter, Jonathan Horowitz and Cecily Brown. D4D thanks the artists who generously gave their art, as well as Evelyn and David Lasry for sharing their booth.

PRINTED MATTER'S ART BOOK FAIR AT PS1, SEPT 21, 2017

D4D manned voter registration and information booths aiming to increase voter turnout for the November 7, 2017 NY City & State elections and ballot proposals

Downtown for Democracy was established in 2003 with the objective of engaging America’s creative community in the democratic process. During the months leading up to the 2004 presidential election, D4D “spent” these assets to educate, register, and mobilize voters and to support candidates committed to individual liberty, social justice and democracy.

Downtown for Democracy members relaunched the group in May 2017—to rally progressives to combat the Trump administration’s destructive and anti-democratic agenda—and put the power of art and creative expression to work for democracy. Info
