Frieze Week Art Fairs

Frieze New York—without doubt the most lavishly produced fine art fair in the city—also brings out the best the city’s galleries and museums have to offer. The annual spring event opens next week, along with some special events around town. Here’s the skeleton:

New this year: The Frieze Artist Award
Paris-based artist Kapwani Kiwanga will realize an open-air installation exploring freedom of movement and architectures of exclusion. Curated by Adrienne Edwards (Whitney Museum of American Art/Walker Art Center, Minneapolis), the Frieze Artist Award forms part of the fair’s non-profit program and is supported by the Luma Foundation. Info

The fourth edition of the contemporary African art fair will present 21 international exhibitors, the artworks of over 60 artists from Africa and its diaspora, alongside an extensive experiential programme of Special Projects and 1-54 FORUM programme of talks curated by Omar Berrada.

Forum presents “performers, site-specific practices and rituals in search of making more living room by exploring the political potentials of intimacy. Featuring Derrick Adams, Sophia Azeb, Babirye Leilah, Hatim Belyamani, Phoebe Boswell, Aruna D’Souza,Emmanuel Iduma, NIC Kay, Lawrence Lemaoana, Joiri Minaya, ElaineMokhtefi, Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Nkiru Nzegwu, Oluremi C. The 2018 edition will see over 85 international contemporary and modern galleries from 30 countries come together to represent over 1,200 artists including CONTEXT, a platform for a selection of new and established contemporary galleries to present emerging, mid-career and cutting-edge talent.

This London original comes to New York for the first time, with a carnival theme, presenting artists working on canvas and concrete alike, with commissions by governments and city councils to bring urban landscapes to life.
