The Art Show and Armory Week 2018

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday February 28, 2018

The first flash of spring art fairs lights up New York now, with The Art Dealers Association of America’s [ADDA] Art Show opening today—a week ahead of the Armory Show Art Week. The Grand Dame of art fairs, The Art Show’s 30th edition, occupying the Park Avenue Armory’s massive Drill Hall once again, presents 72 galleries, with several presenting solo shows by major woman artists. Among them, Lehmann Maupin will show new photographs by Catherine Opie; Cheim & Reid will unveil new large-scale sculptures by Lynda Benglis; at PPOW, Dotty Attie’s subversive gridded narratives painted from photographs are on view; and David Zwirner continues the gallery’s 25th anniversary celebration with gallery artists including Annie Albers, Ruth Asawa, Marlene Dumas, Sherrie Levine, Alice Neel, Bridget Riley, and more.

Next week, The Armory Show, now in its 24th year, returns to the piers with more than 200 galleries from around the globe. This year’s Focus section, curated by Gabriel Ritter of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, includes presentations by 34 artists who make work that provokes questions about a “post-human future.” Galleries include BANK, Shanghai; Berg Contemporary, Reykjavik; Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg; Lawrie Shabibi, Dubai; Parisian Laundry, Montreal; and Yamamoto Gendai, Tokyo, among others.
