The AIPAD Photography Show 2017

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday March 22, 2017

The AIPAD Photography Show New York, presented by The Association of International Photography Art Dealers each spring—this year for the first time at Pier 94—celebrates the medium’s irresistible alchemy, from its 19th-century origins to its practice by artists around the globe today. There is so much new this year that a preview is in order.

The 37th edition of The Photography Show will feature galleries from the U.S., Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico, and South America, among others. First time presenter Ag Galerie Tehran, however, which specializes in contemporary works from the Middle East, is unable to participate due to the Trump travel ban. Info

With four new sections – Salon, Gallery, Positions, and Discovery – the show will offer work both from AIPAD members and new exhibitors, as well as younger galleries, and book dealers and publishers.

This year, AIPAD Talks, featuring prominent curators, collectors, artists, and journalists, will be held Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the show, onsite. Topics cover subjects of interest to collectors and photographers alike, from Starting out in New York City [with Vince Aletti, Dawoud Bey, and Steven Kasher] and James Balog on photographing the wild [with curator Anne Wilkes Tucker] to Corey Keller, curator, SFMoMA and Jean Dykstra of Photograph magazine, on the state of photography now, to collector Artur Walther in conversation with Simon Baker of Tate Modern. Tickets for talks are available online here

New in 2017, The Photography Show will feature a section of the exhibition floor dedicated to book dealers and publishers. Additionally, The PhotoBook Spotlight, presented by Aperture and M*G!C Group Media, celebrates the contribution of the photobook to the evolving story of photography. They will present in-person spotlights on individual books and publishers from 4-6 pm, Thursday-Sunday. Book dealers and publishers from Tokyo to Paso Robles will shed light on trends in publishing and design, with new titles and hard-to-find rarities. Individual exhibitors are hosting book signings as well. Photographers Anthony Hernandez, Carrie Mae Weems, and Mark Peterson, among others, will be on hand to sign their current books. Info

Also new this year, special curated exhibitions from the private collections of Martin Z. Margulies, Madeleine P. Plonsker, and Artur Walther. An additional video special project will feature the work of Colleen Plumb. For a complete list of exhibiting galleries and collections, go here.
