Hip Hop Nights in Brooklyn

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday June 6, 2007

The month of June belongs to the Third Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival in DUMBO. On Thursday, June 7, the party begins at powerHouse Arena, which is hosting the Fiftieth Anniversary re-launch of Stax Records, the legendary soul and R&B label. Stax Records was home to artists such as Otis Redding, Booker T. and the MG's, Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, and many more.

hiphoptrio1.jpgOn view in the powerHouse gallery is Living Proof, Magnum photographer David Alan Harvey's global view of hip hop culture. In 2005, Harvey began photographing emcees in the Bronx River Projects, where hip hop first began in the 1970s. The descendents of the original hip hop artists became the photographer's friends and guides, bringing him into their homes and their lives.

Harvey then followed a path to Spain, France, Gambia, Senegal, South Korea, and Thailand, finding sounds and images that ring true worldwide, thirty years after hip hop's emergence. The exhibition is on view through July 1, and features several 8 by 6-foot pigment prints hung from the ceiling. A reception for the artist, on Thursday, June 14, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, includes music by DJ Language. Top two photos: Living Proof by David Alan Harvey/Magnum Photos, published by powerHouse Books.

On Thursday, June 21, you can celebrate the longest night of the year with an evening of sounds under the stars at The Tobacco Warehouse, Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, featuring video-DJ Uncle Ralph. For tickets and details, visit Brooklyn Bodega.

On Friday, June 22, powerHouse Arena, in association with Brooklyn Bodega, is hosting a screening of Charlie Ahearn's 1982 classic hip hop film, Wild Style. An artist's reception for the launch of Wild Style The Sampler, a collection of Ahearn's photographs of the era, runs from 6:00 to 9:00. The film screening begins at 8:30 pm at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park. Free and open to the public. On Saturday, June 23, a day of hip hop performances begins at noon at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park.
