Documentary Films: Magnum in NY

By Peggy Roalf   Friday June 1, 2007

Magnum Photos, the great photographer-owned and directed agency founded 60 years ago at New York's Museum of Modern Art, rings in another decade with a festival that runs through June. In celebrating the documentary tradition, the festival includes film as well as still photography, in venues all around town.

Tonight, Robert Capa: In Love and War kicks off a month of special screenings at the Walter Read Theater. Known for his legendary love affairs and personal flamboyance, Capa, a founding capa_film.jpgmember of Magnum, was designated "citizen of the world" by those who knew him. As Anna Makepeace's film demonstrates, he had an enormous influence on other photographers. In Love and War offers a fascinating portrait of the man, as well as an important appreciation of the artist. Photo, left: Robert Capa by Gerda Taro, 1938. Courtesy of Magnum Photos.

On Saturday, The Magnum Story, Parts I, II and III will be screened at 2:00 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, Donovan Wylie's film, The Train, which follows a group of Orthodox priests trying to regroup the faithful across Russia, is scheduled. Wylie encounters some extraordinary personalities both on and off the train while creating a portrait of a country and a culture moving in several different directions simultaneously. Rene Burri's mid-60s film The Two Faces of China, a true document of an extraordinary moment in modern Chinese history, can also be seen on Saturday and Sunday.

At Film Forum, the Werner Herzog [Non]Fiction film festival continues through June 7, including Werner Herzog PICKS, the director's selection made especially for the Magnum Festival. Over the weekend, Herzog's PICKS include two films by Les Blank, including A Life Well Spent, about the legendary Delta blues artist, Mance Lipscomb. Also being screened this weekend are Herzog classics Fata Morgana, Lessons of Darkness and La Soufriere
.
Magnum will present over 40 documentary film screenings in addition to more than 30 exhibitions and special events. Please check the Magnum Festival website for details.
