The Q&A: Kyle T. Webster
Q: Originally from New York City, what are some of your favorite things about living and working in the South?
A: I was born in New York, but lived overseas (mostly Southeast Asia) all throughout my childhood, so I’m a third culture kid from essentially nowhere. My favorite thing about living and working in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is the pace of life. No rush, no pressure.
Q: Do you keep a sketchbook? What is the balance between art you create on paper [or other analog medium] versus in the computer?
A: I don’t keep a sketchbook because I sadly just don’t feel like drawing much when I’m not working on assignments. All that time spent drawing for clients makes me want to do completely different things with my free time - tennis, golf, music, movies ...
Q: What is the most important item in your studio?
A: My Wacom Cintiq 22HD.
Q: How do you know when the art is finished?
A: When I have already overworked it and moved back a few steps, several times over.
Q: What was your favorite book as a child?
A: Where the Wild Things Are.
Q: What is the best book you’ve recently read?
A: Danny the Champion of the World, by Roald Dahl.
Q: If you had to choose one medium to work in for an entire year, eliminating all others, what medium would you choose?
A: Watercolor.
Q: What elements of daily life exert the most influence on your work practice?
A: My children (or rather, being a father). I work around them, and this makes me very efficient and organized.
Q: What was the [Thunderbolt] painting or drawing or film or otherwise that most affected your approach to art?
A: It’s a tie between this painting by Norman Rockwell: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/Norman_Rockwell_-_No_Swimming_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg and the drawings by Mort Drucker in Mad Magazine.
Q: Who was the [Thunderbolt] teacher or mentor or visiting artist who most influenced you early in your training or career?
A: Michael Ananian at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. http://www.michaelananian.com/
Q: What would be your last supper?
A: Homemade fresh pasta with REAL Ragu Crusty, fresh Italian bread with olive oil. A big glass of Brunello di Montalcino. Italian Wedding Cake. Limoncello. Espresso, and … goodnight.
