Brooklyn-based artist Daniel Heidkamp is a figurative painter whose plein-air landscapes are abstract enough to be appreciated as immersive color studies alone. Having grown up near the North Shore of Boston, he spent summers enjoying the beaches and light of Cape Ann. In a YouTube video made at the Pace Paper studio, he talks about the area as a hub of American art history, a place inhabited by artists such as Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Milton Avery, and Marsden Hartley, among others. And about the light.

He returned to Gloucester during the past two summers to paint the scenes he remembered from those years, making landscapes that distill the essential qualities of a languid, carefree summer. These he used as resource material for the series of unique pulp paper paintings that depict seascapes, interiors, houses nestled in foliage on rolling hills, and boats skimming across frothy shores in playful hues.

A solo show of these works opened last night at Pace Prints. 521 West 26th Street, NY, NY. Info
