Hot Type in the City

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday July 15, 2015

Tomorrow night, Thursday, July 16, the glitterati of typography will converge live, at Strand Books, for an evening of typographic intrigue.

Type Nite, presented by the Type Directors Club, in collaboration with Princeton Architectural Press, and Designers & Books, will be a star-studded evening, with discussion, signings and prizes. In front of a live audience, Tobias Frere-Jones, Peter Mendelsund, Abbott Miller, and Ellen Lupton will show us their projects that went south or turned sour. It’s an enjoyable discussion of mess-ups and do-overs, bound to be a panacea for designers of all types [sic]!

The event is open via live stream to anyone in the world from Strand Book’s YouTube channel. During the Q&A portion of the event, the hosts will take questions on Twitter, offering a free book to anyone, the world over, whose question is chosen. Ellen’s new book Graphic Design: The New Basics, 2nd Edition will also be available for signing and inscribing to those tuning in at home.

Type Nite: Thursday, July 16, 7-8 pm, at Strand Books. 828 Broadway, at 12th Street, NYC. The event is being held in the Rare Books room, third floor. Free and open to the public. No purchase required.
The official website is type-nite.nyc where you can get the Twitter handle to submit your question.

As a long-time fan of this type-savvy group, DART is also hosting a contest, with designer prizes. The first two entrants who correctly identify the authors of these three American Modernist designs will receive a copy of Graphic Design: The New Basics, 2nd Edition, by Ellen Lupton, or her new book, How Posters Work (published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same title currently on view at the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt). Prizes are with compliments of Princeton Architectural Press.

The DART Contest rules:

This is the new multiple choice quiz: Correctly identify the designers of the three pieces above from the long list of possible choices below, in italics, and include as much information as possible, such as typeface/families used, name of agency, etc. Make it personal! There are bound to be a lot of correct answers so the more interesting your submission is, the more likely it will be a winner.

Please include your name and email address. Winners will be contacted for their USPS mailing address.

Deadline: Friday, July 17, 2015, 5 pm. Winners will be announced in next Tuesday’s DART Board. Credits for the art will be posted at that time.
