A Week In A Month of Photography

By Peggy Roalf   Tuesday March 2, 2010

Photograph magazine, the ubiquitous guide to photography galleries and events nationwide, is one of those unsung publications that is universally liked. It's small and portable, easily found in galleries - in fact, the magazine includes a list of galleries where it's available - and when copies run out, it's easily accessed online. Each issue features an arresting cover and short, snappy articles about what's happening in the galleries and in the marketplace. The current roster of writers includes Lyle Rexer, Vince Aletti, Reuel Golden, Jean Dykstra and Sarah Schmerler.

This month, in addition to AIPAD, The Armory Show, ADAA, and other concurrent fairs, there are gallery openings, artist talks, curator lectures, auction previews, and walking tours all over town. To bring all these events into focus, publisher Bill Mindlin has brought out a special issue: photographNYC. It came by email as a pdf and it made me want to know more, so I asked Bill how this concise guide to photography in March came into being.

"It is our first time doing a supplement," he replied. "Given the various art fairs coming up in March, It just seemed like it was an ideal time to promote all the exciting photo exhibitions and events that are going on in New York City. Many collectors are unaware of just how rich the New York photography world is, so we thought that by printing 25,000 copies and distributing them at the Armory, AIPAD, and at galleries and other venues we could generate some much needed publicity and excitement."

I also asked if, like photograph magazine, photographNYC would be available online and the answer is affirmative.

So put on your most comfortable shoes and celebrate a world of photography in New York this month, no hassle. Following is a select list of openings and events over the next several days. Check out photographNYC for what comes after.
