Lance Armstrong: Art Aficionado

By Peggy Roalf   Thursday December 3, 2009

The other day when I was filling out the week's calendar, an email came in from Rob Clayton of the Clayton Brothers, Rob and Christian, in LA. He wrote to let me know that they have a new piece in Lance Armstrong's Stages exhibition, which opens tonight at Art Basel Miami Beach. So here goes:

Lance Armstrong and Nike launched Stages, a global art exhibition to raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer. Last month the show was on view at Deitch Projects in New York. The press release states that the exhibition is a unique celebration of human potential inspired by Lance and dedicated to the fight against cancer. It goes on to say that by 2010, cancer will be the number one cause of death on this planet. As one currently undergoing treatment for cancer - and a recreational cyclist to boot! - I urge DART readers to check out the incredible work in this show, and watch videos of artists in their studios.

One of the elements that make Stages special is that it not only travels (first Paris, then New York, and now to Miami) but adds artists and new works in each new locale. For the launch of the show in Miami, three new artists have contributed work to the show: The Clayton Brothers (from LA), Tomoo Gokita (Japan), and Erik Parker (Brooklyn). So thanks, Rob, for the heads-up!

Participating artists: Cai Guo-Qiang, Clayton Brothers, Rosson Crow, Jules de Balincourt, Dzine, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Tomoo Gokita, Andreas Gursky, KAWS, Geoff McFetridge, Yoshitomo, Nara, Catherine Opie, Os Gemeos, Erik Parker, Jose Parla, Raymond Pettibon, Lari Pittman, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Tom Sachs, Kenny Scharf, Eric White, Christopher Wool, Dustin Yellin, and Aaron Young.
