Black and White on 57th Street

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday April 4, 2007

Should you skip the always colorful Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue this Sunday, make a visit instead to East 57th Street, on Saturday. Photography galleries along this luxe shopping strip are currently presenting black and white images that offer stark relief from the color that usually prevails.

At Pace/Macgill, work by one of the most influential figures in contemporary photography is now on view. Tod Papageorge, who took over as head of the graduate photography program at Yale after Walker Evans' death in 1975, has shaped a star-studded generation that includes such luminaries as Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Gregory Crewdson, An-My Lê, John Pilson and Justine Kurland. One of Papageorge's early triumphs was to be included in the 1967 "New Documents" exhibition at MoMA, but he has not had a solo exhibition since 1985. His work is currently being "rediscovered" in a wave of rediscoveries that has included Garry Winogrand, one of Papageorge's shooting buddies during the 1960s. This winter Aperture will publish American Sports, 1970, or How We Spent the War in Vietnaman.
