Art for the Sake of Artists

By Peggy Roalf   Monday October 19, 2009

CALLING ALL ARTISTS: Make art to support cancer patients and the visual arts. The Rema Hort Mann Foundation invites yor to submit drawings, paintings, mixed media - whatever is your passion - as long as it is done on a sheet of 8-1/2 x 11 paper.

WHY: Your works on paper will be sold for $250 to support the Foundation's activities, which include grants to artists and special funds for people battling cancer.

"Looking at a piece of art and wanting it is a pure form of love," says Foundation Director Quang Bao. "No buzz, no crazy press releases, no critics, no sales record, no whispers into your ear - just buy it using your gut - and for a good cause, too."

Two from hundreds of 8-1/2 x 11 submissions already received for the RHMF benefit.

HOW: Email your name, address and phone number to The Rema Hort Mann Foundation telling them you want to participate. When you receive the paper, do your thing. On the back of the sheet, provide the title, date, and medium, then sign it. Please do not put your name on the front because the Foundation will not be able to include your work in this "silent" art sale.

DEADLINE: Mail or drop off your work so that it arrives no later than Friday, October 23rd. Address it to: Quang Bao, The Rema Hort Mann Foundation, 153 Hudson Street, Ground Floor, New York, New York, NY 10013. If you have questions, please call 212.966.8444 or email the Foundation: rhmfoundation@gmail.com.

BENEFIT PARTY AND SALE: The work will be sold on Thursday January 28th at the Jack Shainman Gallery, in Chelsea. All participating artists are invited free of charge. Some of the artists who have already contributed work are Guy Ben Ner, Allison Blickle, Michael Cline, Chris Dorland, Marcel Dzama, and Mika Rottenberg among hundreds of others. Artists who have recently received grants from RHMF include Glen Fogel (2008), Mickalene Thomas (2007) and Adam Helms (2006).

STAY TUNED: Among The Rema Hort Mann Foundation's activities that galvanize the art scene is the Annual Art Crawl. This year's event, in May, uncovered the Lower East Side's most adventurous galleries, from Houston to Canal Street. Watch the Foundation's website for upcoming events you won't want to miss.
