Exhibitions: How Celebrity Was Fabricated, Before Social Media

Since the founding of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, photography has played a vital role in how it has documented the history of motion pictures. Beginning on June 28 and running through June of 2026, MoMA will present the exhibition "Face Value: Celebrity Press Photography, featuring over 200 images from its archive-studio portraits made from 1921 to 1996, featuring stars such as Clara Bow, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, Spenser Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, and more. The show, notes MoMA, examines the evolution of editorial practice "before the digital age, AI technology, and social media reshaped the experience of celebrity."
