Dr Barry Smith and his colleagues at the Queens Hospital Center in New York. The Epicenter. April 2020. This image, which appeared on the cover of the magazine’s April 19 issue, depicted Dr. Barry Todd Smith and his colleagues in the Queens Hospital Center emergency department gathered around a Covid-19 patient in acute respiratory distress. They are performing an emergency intubation, an intricate, dangerous procedure that involves threading a plastic tube connected to a ventilator into a patient’s trachea in order to facilitate breathing and prevent cardiac arrest.
For one week in April 2020, Philip Montgomery visited seven municipal hospitals and a public health clinic in New York City. This was a raw and unprecedented look at the underfunded, overwhelmed public hospitals that were trying to save the city’s residents during the height of the Covid crisis.
