In May, a Minneapolis police officer knelt on George Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. To no avail, Floyd begged for air and cried out for his mother, who had died two years earlier.

The Epicenter

This image, which appeared on the cover of the magazine’s April 19 issue, depicted Dr. Barry Todd Smith and his colleagues in the Queens Hospital Center emergency department gathered around a Covid-19 patient in acute respiratory distress. They are performing an emergency intubation, an intricate, dangerous procedure that involves threading a plastic tube connected to a ventilator into a patient’s trachea in order to facilitate breathing and prevent cardiac arrest. For one week in April 2020, Philip Montgomery visited seven municipal hospitals and a public health clinic in New York City. This was a raw and unprecedented look at the underfunded, overwhelmed public hospitals that were trying to save the city’s residents during the height of the Covid crisis.

Sal and Nick Farenga are owners of the 124-year-old Farenga Brothers Funeral Home in the the Bronx,. During the height of the pandemic last spring, they were often fielding as many as 100 phone calls a day, and were for the first time forced to turn families away. Philip Montgomery documented 124-year-old Farenga Brothers Funeral Home in the Bronx, as well as its fifth-generation funeral directors, Nick and Sal Farenga. The brothers were working tirelessly to fulfill their mission to grieving families, even as they were overwhelmed with coronavirus deaths.
