Passings: George Butler, 'Pumping Iron' Director, Dies At 78

George Butler, whose landmark documentary film Pumping Iron made a star of Arnold Schwarzenegger, has died at age 78, notes Generation Iron. The news was confirmed by Schwarzenegger on his official Instagram page. Butler died on October 21, at his beloved home, True Farm, in New Hampshire, reports Jeffrey Smith of Contact Press Images. Butler established his own film company, White Mountain Films, in 1972, and produced a number of critically acclaimed documentaries focusing on bodybuilders, the planet Mars, and the Ernest Shackleton expedition. He was also a gifted photographer whose subjects included Detroit, Jamaica and politician John Kerry.   Read the full Story >>

We previously spotlighted the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021 competition but somehow overlooked the winner of the contest’s Urban Wildlife Award. Now we can’t unsee the picture, which was taken by Israeli Canadian photographer Gil Wizen during a trip to Ecuador, after he found a Brazilian wandering spider guarding its young …under his bed. The hand-sized spider, which feeds on frogs and cockroaches, is said to be one of the world’s most venomous. Now the photo is a media sensation. See: the Mirror. Cole is best known as a music photographer—he’s shot the likes of SZA, Erykah Badu, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé—and as one of the photographers on the ground with the crowd at the Jan. 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.
