Honor Roll: Laura El-Tantawy Wins PHmuseum 2020 Grant

Egyptian photographer Laura El-Tantawy has been awarded the £5,000 (about $6,679) PHmuseum 2020 Women Photographers Grant Main Prize for her project “I'll Die For You,” in which she explores farming as a diminishing way of life as a consequence of persistent climatic variations and economic demands. “In all the images, the rich, evocative textures show that the earth is part of humanity, and humanity is part of the earth. Tech News: Panasonic LUMIX S5 Can Now Record 5.9K ProRes RAW

Earlier this month Panasonic teased updates for its full-frame S series mirrorless cameras, including the popular S1H, with improved autofocus performance, additional recording formats, and higher bit-depth options. Books: Ming Smith Is Back to Shake Things Up Again

Ming Smith has been considered a touchstone for generations of Black photographers, but, notes ART News, it took a while for her to become a mainstay in the art world’s biggest institutions. Smith was an integral part of the Kamoinge Workshop, a key Black photography collective formed in 1963, which is the subject of a new exhibition at the Whitney Museum. She later became the first Black female photographer with work in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Now there is an Aperture monograph surveying her work.   Read the full Story >>
