“It all started with an ice cream cone — a friend of mine told me it’s illegal in Alabama to have an ice cream cone in your back pocket,” says photographer Olivia Locher. Fascinated, Locher began researching other odd laws, from Delaware’s prohibition against drinking perfume to Ohio’s ban against disrobing in front of a portrait of a man. The result is the book I Fought the Law, in which Locher depicts strange legislation in archly humorous images. “It initially started as a way for me to expand my studio practice,” she tells BuzzFeed.   Read the full Story >>

Social News: Instagram Breaks the Grid, Adds Anti-Troll Tools and Profile Support

Ever-evolving Instagram is making some more changes: PetaPixel reports that Instagram seems to be breaking its time-honored 3×3 grid design, which may seem unfortunate news to photographers who’ve spent hours of effort turning the grids into creative mosaics. A number of Instagram users across the Web have noticed 4×4 grids on their accounts. Meanwhile, DIY Photography spotlights Instagram’s new Follows You feature, which makes it easier for users to see which of the people they follow are following them back. Exhibitions: James Herbert's Nude Film Stills from the '80s

In what L’Oeil de la Photographie  calls “one of the most beautiful exhibitions of the new season,”    New York City’s Gitterman Gallery is featuring James Herbert’s photographs of nude young adults — stills taken from films he made in the 1980s. Herbert projected individual frames on a wall, then re-photographed them with 35mm black-and-white film. He later enlarged the images, printing them on 16 x 20 inch paper. You can now pre-order American Photography 33 — the hardcover book featuring winners of the American Photography 33 competition. This year’s edition comes with a cover mashup of moody portraits by photographer Will McBane featuring Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The book, designed by Michele Outland of Gather Journal, also includes 317 images selected from some 8,000 submissions to the contest.
