Call for Applications: Two Awards for Writing About Photography

The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation and the German Photographic Society (DGPh) are offering the two prizes for writing about photography. The “Thinking Photography. DGPh Research Award” recognizes projects in photographic theory and history as well as approaches from the humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences. The “Writing Photography. DGPh Award for Innovative Publication” recognizes pioneering publications on photography, as well as journalistic, essayistic, and other publications. What We Learned This Week: Margaret Thomas, First Female Photographer at The Washington Post, Dies at 84

Margaret Thomas, who covered riots, international disputes, global summits, the Watergate hearings and presidential politics across four decades as the first female staff photographer at The Washington Post, died June 6 at her home in Hume, Virginia. She was 84, noted the newspaper. Addendum: King Charles Is Looking for a Videographer for "On-Trend" Content

Buckingham Palace is advertising for a videographer to help the Royal family produce on-trend content for social media, notes The Independent. The listing marks the first time that a videographer has been hired by a British monarch. The full-time role pays £52,000 and entails the staff member working on everything from major state events to behind-the-scene moments. The ideal candidate wil take a “social-first approach to storytelling, working on end-to-end video and photography production to produce high-quality content for platforms including Instagram, X and YouTube.”   Read the full Story >>

Dept. of Ideas: Warping the World Cup with 'Homespun" Images

Jonny Weeks, a picture editor at The Guardian, admits that he’s never attended a World Cup match and that he envies those who have. But he’s found a creative outlet for his soccer fandom—creating “warped” views of the action using printed photographs and a digital flat-bed scanner. This World Cup has seen a rise in the number of photographers covering the tournament in unique ways, he adds, pointing to  viral  imagery that Florence Pernet made by photographing her TV screen.   Read the full Story >>
