Acclaimed Magnum photographer Raghu Rai, widely regarded as one of the foremost chroniclers of independent India, died on April 26, reports Al Jazeera. He was 83. A construction engineer by training, Rai was born in a village in what is now Pakistan’s Punjab province before the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent. He went on to become an iconic photographer documenting the complex social and political life of India, with his work ranging from historic turning points to intimate portraits. While many manufacturers cheer the camera market’s rebound after a few quiet years. Sigma’s CEO, Kazuto Yamaki holds a cautious view, notes DP Review, which interviewed Yamaki at this year's CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan. “I'm a little bit concerned about the market situation or economic situation in general in 2026, mainly due to some instability in politics," he said. “Over the past 13 years, I’ve been drawn to places where history is unfolding. I especially wanted to photograph what happens when states and citizens come into conflict,” writes photographer Matthew Connors at The New York Times. Originally, he notes, he thought of his pictures as belonging to separate projects defined by their geography — Ukraine, Hong Kong, United States, and elswehre.
