When photographer Callum O’Keefe mulls over ideas for photo projects, he often looks for eccentric events that take place annually in the UK— events, notes It’s Nice That, like the World Bog Snorkeling Championships in the rural South Wales town of Llanwrtyd Wells. The event itself involves a 60-meter swim in a peat bog—not exactly the Olympics, but much muddier—but O’Keefe is as much interested in the people who show up, often to compete for the prize for the best costume. This year’s Frieze Los Angeles art fair (Feb. 26-Mar 1) features an abundance of photography, with multiple stands entirely dedicated to work in the medium, suggesting that the enthusiasm for photographs among contemporary art lovers is strong. The relatively lower prices of photography (compared to other types of art works) has cultivated new audiences, notes Frieze. Huerta’s work, constructed from memory and imagination, depicts a world that feels familiar—less like invention than recollection. Giovinco’s long-exposure night photography “Churn” series, made in Greenland, finds strange color casts mixed with moonlight or illuminated by the aurora borealis. “Given recent geopolitical and environmental dangers, I fee Greenland is ever more on the precipice of collapse,” he says.
