Spotlight: The Photographer Who Sees with Her Fingertips

Like many analog photographers, Aspen Mays makes images in a darkroom. But unlike most of them, she doesn’t use a camera and film. She creates her photograms in complete darkness, without even the red glow of the safelight. For hours, she works with eyes unseeing and often closed, guided by muscle memory, touch, and the sound of dripping water. “I’ve always been interested in uniqueness,” Mays says, “working with base materials that rely on hand processes."   Read the full Story >>

Follow-Up: NPPA Warns Against Government Photo Manipulation

After the White House posted a digitally doctored image of a protester arrested in Minneapolis, the National Press Photographers Association has issued a warning about government photo manipulation while reaffirming its “commitment to visual integrity.” As we noted previously, the altered image made it seem that the protester, Nekima Levy Armstrong, was crying. Her skin was also darkened. “NPPA’s opposition to such practices is rooted in foundational principles that guide visual journalism and distinguish it from propaganda,” notes the organization.   Read the full Story >>

Art News: This Exhibition Is Fundraising to Save Lee Miller Negatives

The Lee Miller Archives, which were established after the American photographer’s vast collection of photographs and writings were discovered in the attic of her Sussex, UK, home following her death in 1977, is raising money to provide urgent conservation of thousands of her negatives, some of which are nearly 100 years old. Proceeds from the sales of works on show at Lyndsey Ingram gallery in London will ensure that as many as 60,000 negatives and prints—some of them in a perilous state—will be preserved, notes The Art Newspaper.   Read the full Story >>

Agenda: Applications Open for the 2026 New York Portfolio Review

Applications are now open for the free New York Portfolio Review, produced by The New York Times photo department, Photoville and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. This year the program will bring together 160 talented photographers with 80 top photo editors, publishers and curators on May 9 and 17, as part of the Photoville Festival.
