Honor Roll: Photo of Burn Survivor Wins Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize

The UK’s National Portrait Gallery has named Martina Holmberg, a Stockholm-based photographer, winner of the 2025 Taylor Wessing photographic portrait prize for her photo of a woman named Mel—a burn survivor gazing thoughtfully out of a window. The portrait is part of Holmberg’s project “The Outside of the Inside,” in which she documents people with facial and physical differences that fall outside of the norm, notes FAD. Newspaper archives are at risk around the United States: Often, notes the Columbia Journalism Review, they are lost when newspapers shutter, move to smaller offices, or are purchased. Photographs, more time-consuming to digitize than text, are particularly vulnerable, and copyright issues can make repurposing them complex.
