Vital Impacts, an organization supporting visual storytellers who capture compelling, solutions-focused environmental stories at the local level, is accepting submissions for its latest grant cycle, including one $20,000 grant and six $5,000 grants. Grant recipients will have 12 months to develop their projects, with support from Vital Impacts to publish and showcase their work. Additionally, ten emerging photographers will be chosen to participate in an intensive mentorship program, Deadline: Sept. 15.

New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region recently marked the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which occurred on Aug. 29, 2005, and now NPR looks back at the storm’s legacy in photographs. “Katrina resulted in nearly 1,400 deaths, according to revised statistics from the National Hurricane Center, and remains the costliest storm in U.S. history at around $200 billion in today's dollars,” notes the news site’s “Picture Show” blog.
