In 1996, Buck photographed former senator and former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern in skimpy swim trunks. “When I met him, he was walking up from the beach and was in a Speedo bathing suit and looked amazing. He was in his seventies!” Buck tells Digital Photo World. How did he get such a personage to pose in such an unexpected way? He just asked. At first, McGovern said no. Buck said that he wouldn’t submit the image for publication, but wanted it for his portfolio. Lesson: Ask and sometimes you shall receive.

According to executives from Discord and Substack, the era of social media as broadcast has given way to a new kind of platform, one where engagement is built not on viral posts but tightly knit communities. Speaking at a Social Media Week panel, Discord’s vice president of sales Adam Bauer and Substack’s head of lifestyle partnerships Christina Loff made the case that their platforms are ushering in a new era of platform media. “The biggest change we’re seeing is that community is the product,” said Bauer. “It’s not about follower counts anymore.”

NASA has announced the winners of its 2024 Photographer of the Year competition, which celebrates the talented photographers who work with the space agency. Photographers were recognized in a number of different categories, including People, Portrait, Documentation, and Places. Photographer Josh Valcarcel won all but the Places category, effectively making him the NASA Photographer of the Year, notes My Modern Met. Among his images: a portrait of astronaut Nichole “Vapor” Ayers made at the Johnson Space Center studio.
